In the raw light of day, we are here to support all of your initiatives, and that includes messaging. We would like to know what your companies (and your leaders) are saying and sharing with respect to the recent Asian/AAPI/APEC attacks by white supremacists and domestic terrorists. We also want to forward some messaging that can be used or a framework if you are looking for the words to encompass you commitment to action:
The research is fact: Anti-Asian hate crimes rose 150% in 2020, a study from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism reports, and "nearly 3800 incidents were reported since the start of the pandemic with a substantial increase from the previous year" in research released by Stop AAPI (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders) Hate. This study reports and calls out that 69% of women respondents experience a more anti-Asian anti-Asian violence compared to 29% of men. Intersectionality is a greatly impacting this, in that "the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage." The past year with the powerful growing awareness and action on Black Lives Matter has taught everyone that we must first seek out the resources and educate ourselves in order to be an effective ally. This ongoing work is critical.
In addition, please give your support to your AAPI community - employees, leaders, colleagues, friends and family. Give them space as needed.
